Suction-assisted lipectomy, also known as liposuction, is the surgical removal of excess fat from areas that are often resistant to diet and exercise including the hips, thighs, abdomen, and neck. Other common sites include the waist, arms, and knees.
At the beginning of your procedure, Dr. Drehsen will inject a certain amount of fluid, mixed with lidocaine & epinephrine (tumescent fluid) to reduce discomfort and bleeding, then an incision will be made just large enough to insert a hollow, needle-like instrument called a cannula. The cannula is attached at the opposite end to a machine that creates a very strong vacuum. Dr. Drehsen then manipulates the cannula to loosen and remove fat deposits. The Clinique's favorite technique is P.A.L. or power assisted liposuction in which a high speed reciprocating blunt tip cannula esssentially loosens up fat in a very safe and bloodless fashion. P.A.L is done in our outpatient facility under intravenous or general anesthesia.

Performed for over 20 years, lipo has been proven to be a very safe procedure; however, all surgeries carry some risk. Qualified surgeons will reduce the risk by carefully choosing their patients. The best candidates for liposuction are those of relatively normal weight with isolated pockets of excess fat. Most importantly, the patient should have supporting skin. With the advent of ultrasound liposuction, U.A.L. has allowed for treatment of very fibrous tissues, especially in men.
Skin tone is ultimately the limiting factor in selecting liposuction as a treatment. If your skin tone is poor, a tightening procedure (such as a tummy tuck, arm tuck, thigh tuck) may be recommended as well.
