Eyelid Surgery (or Blepharoplasty)

Lids wrinkles and bags

As we age, our eyelids undergo changes, making us look tired and older. Factors such as heredity and sun damage accelerate these changes. Many younger people also complain of puffiness of lower lids as a result of congenital development of excess fatty tissues, fat deposits, commonly referred to as "bags" and loose skin of the upper and lower eyelids can be removed, usually during a relatively simple outpatient procedure.

Eyelid surgery, technically referred to as Blepharoplasty, is a procedure that removes fat bags, usually along with excess skin, from the upper and lower eyelids.

A blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids separately, or at the same time as a facelift. The upper eyelid incision is made in the natural skin fold, while the lower eyelid incision may be made directly under the eyelash line or invisibly on the inside of the lower lid. The excess skin and fatty tissue is removed and the incisions are carefully closed.

This procedure can be accompanied by fractional laser resurfacing or peel, in order to smooth out fine wrinkles.

Intraconjunctival lower lid blepharoplasty can trim out eyelid bags without visible incisions when there's no loose skin present.

These surgical procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, under local or general anesthesia, depending on what works best for the patient. After the surgery, some swelling and bruising may be present. The swelling will usually begin to subside within 3-4 days, while the bruising may take up to a week or so to completely heal.

Droopy Lower Lids or Malar Bags

Occasionally the lower lid may require a more complex repair to tighten a loose structure (hound dog look) or to reduce puffiness below lids (malar bags). This procedure is called canthopexy and is sometimes needed at the time of eyelid skin removal.
